Mt. Kearsarge is a prominent feature that stands out in the area. At 2,937 ft. This hike gives you a real bang for your buck. It’s great for families as well when you leave from the beautiful and well maintained Winslow State Park (which has public bathrooms). The Winslow Trail, marked with red blazes, begins at the parking area at Winslow State Park. It climbs for 1.1 miles (1,100 vertical feet) through the forest and over bare granite ledge to the summit where you will find a fire tower, which is open to the public when staffed and offers phenomenal views of the surrounding area. If you are looking for a moderate, not too challenging hike that rewards you with great views and a state park that has wonderful family amenities then it’s tough to beat Winslow St. Park!

The Dartmouth-Lake Sunapee Region has many incredible skiing opportunities such as Dartmouth Skiway, Whaleback, Arrowhead and Storrs Hill but none can match the terrain and size of Mount Sunapee. WIth 67 trails, 11 lifts and slopes covering 233 skiable acres Mount Sunapee is a top notch resort experience in New Hampshire. We love Mount Sunapee for their incredible grooming which makes every day a “hero” day, the cruiseriffic “Sun Bowl” (which is about as much fun you can have on two skis) and their beginner area which is great for those that are learning or children just getting into the sport. The mountain also has numerous terrain parks for those of you that like to hit table tops and slide rails. Once you are finished you can kick back with a cold one in the great Apres-ski scene in Goosefeathers Pub.

There is an incredible system of “rail trails” throughout the region. These trails all run along old railroad beds that have been redesigned into multi-use trail systems. The Sugar River Trail is a picturesque 9 mile trail that begins at the Newport Recreation Department on Belknap Ave in Newport and ends at Washington Street in Claremont. The trail boasts two historic and scenic covered bridges and meanders along the Sugar River. We love that we can hit this trail with our kids in tow to ride bikes or a family walk or we can head out on a longer run to get the juices flowing. If you are looking for a predictable and consistent trail experience this is the place.
